City Employee Spotlight for July – Cephus Cannon

Cephus Cannon named City Spotlight for July
If you ask Cephus Cannon, 59, he says he is just, “a simple guy”. He loves his family, his church, and getting up and going to work every day. He is currently legal guardian of his granddaughter, Jaden, 8, who keeps him on his toes and his life is pretty busy right now. According to Cannon, “Being a single grandparent can be challenging, but I am blessed to be able to help out my daughter, Kayla, establish her career in the military. She is stationed at Ft. Campbell in Kentucky. Cannon has worked as a heavy equipment operator for the city street department for 22 years. “I absolutely love my job and the people I work with,” says Cannon. “My supervisors Stanley Carr and Ricky Hulsey are the best. I love living and working in my hometown. Jacksonville is a great place to be.” He drives a truck picking up non-perishable items that residents discard on the city streets. Stanley Carr, Cannon’s supervisor, said, “Cephus Cannon has always been a very dependable employee that not only gets along great with fellow employees but also does a great job communicating with our citizens.” Cannon was born in Jacksonville and graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1977. He then joined the Army and served our country for three years. After returning home, Cannon worked several different jobs including driving a truck and he was even a barber at one time. He plans on continuing his career with the city until his retirement. “I will never completely retire,” says Cannon. “I like to stay active and connected. I just enjoy people.” Another one of Cannon’s passions is his church. He is a deacon at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. Cannon credits God for everything good in his life and never passes up a chance to witness to people young and old. When asked about his hobbies, Cannon replied, “I enjoy reading my Bible, spending time with family, and watching cowboy movies. I just enjoy living life.” Thank you, Cephus Cannon, for your hard work and dedication to the City of Jacksonville.
