The Planning and Building Department works in cooperation with the Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustment, providing information and/or assistance needed for all aspects of the planning and building process. The Planning and Building Department consists of three major divisions, listed below, with a brief description of the various duties performed.
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Telephone calls accepted until 5:00 p.m.
The Planning Division is the liaison between the applicant (property owner, developer, engineer, etc.) and the Planning Commission and City Council in the following areas:
- Street Vacation
- Development Review
- Traffic Counts
- Street Lights
- Maps (Base, Zoning and Topographic)
- Census data
- Comprehensive Plan
The Planning Commission meets in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 320 Church Avenue, SE, at 6 p.m. on the Thursday following the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Those persons who have business to bring before the Planning Commission should call City Hall at (256) 435-7611 to obtain the schedule of deadlines for submitting information for Planning Commission consideration.

The Building Division is devoted to the health, safety and welfare of the general public through enforcement of adopted building, fire and zoning codes. The following are areas covered by the Building Inspector:
- Building Permits
- Flood Zone Information
- Sign Permits

The Code Enforcement Division helps to promote and maintain a safe and desirable living environment by enforcing regulatons to eliminate the following:
- High grass and weeds
- Trash and debris
- Dilapidated structures
- Abandoned/Junk/Unlicensed Vehicles
- License Inspections
- Zoning Violations
- Nuisance Abatement
