Planning and Building

The Planning and Building Department works in cooperation with the Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Adjustment, providing information and/or assistance needed for all aspects of the planning and building process.  The Planning and Building Department consists of three major divisions, listed below, with a brief description of the various duties performed.

Planning

The Planning Department is the liaison between the applicant (property owner, developer, engineer, etc.) and the Planning Commission and City Council in the following areas:

  • Annexation
  • Subdivision
  • Rezoning
  • Street and Alley Vacation
  • Development Review
  • Traffic Counts
  • Demographics
  • Street Lights
  • Maps (Zoning, City Limits and Flood Plain)
  • Census Data
  • Comprehensive Plan

The Planning Commission meets in the Meeting Room at City Hall, 320 Church Avenue, SE, at 6 p.m. on the Thursday following the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  Those persons who have business to bring before the Planning Commission should call the Planning and Building Department (256) 782-3840 to obtain the schedule of meetings and deadlines for submitting information for Planning Commission consideration.

Building

The Building Division is devoted to the health, safety and welfare of the general public through enforcement of adopted building, fire and zoning codes.  The following are areas covered by the Building Inspector:

  • Code Enforcement

Code Enforcement

The code Enforcement Division helps to promote and maintain a safe and desirable living environment by enforcing regulations to eliminate the following: See Code Enforcement Page.  The Building Inspector assists the Code Enforcement Officer as needed.  The Code Enforcement Officer works directly for the Police Department.
